Cheap Entertainment

When you live close to a field of long grass, entertainment is cheap and plentiful. I watch my boys make pathways and 'rooms.' It brings back memories of my own childhood, growing up next to a large field. Even bucking hay is a pleasant memory now, whether or not it was enjoyable at the time.

Levi creating his own grass tepee:

It is going to be an incredible summer. I thank God every day for our little piece of earth. Want to come visit? I'll make some scones and a pitcher of lemonade!

  1. Oh Heidi, you're blessed!! What a wonderful childhood you're providing them. Scones & lemonade?!? I'm tempted to start driving now! Something tells me our six boys would get along just fine. ;-)

  2. Hey, it would only be about a day's drive. Okay, one really long day. :) But if you're ever on your way north... I bet our boys would have a blast together!

  3. Um, yes please! I'll be up in Eugene for Christmas this year, and I'm sure the womenfolk in my family will be our traditional pilgrimage to Poet's Garden. I'd LOVE to meet you! It would be so much fun.

But yes, it looks like you have a wonderful summer ahead of you. I live in urban sprawl with 3 million other people - so enjoy the grass for me.

  6. Heidi :-) ...

We do occasionally drive up to Spokane. But this summer, lack of vacation time, budget, and insane gas prices have all conspired against our summer foray to the Great Northwest. :-( But, I'll file away that sweet idea in the back of my mind (stop in Willamette. let boys shake dust off and run around with other boys. drink lemonade. and eat scones. on a pretty porch. with a pretty lady. appreciating God's beautiful landscape.)

  7. Toblerone~ Oh, wouldn't that be fun to meet up? :)

Laurel and Nicole~ Thanks for coming for a virtual visit anyway! :)

Skeller~ Oh, don't I understand. :)We had hoped to take a road trip each year with the boys (last year was our first), but I can't see that happening this year with gas prices. Well, if you ever do head this direction, keep us in mind for a pit stop. We're only a couple miles off I-5. You enjoy the gorgeous beach for us this summer, will ya, and we'll enjoy the field of grass, LOL.

  8. We are very much looking forward to our visit. What can we bring?

  9. Nan~ I looking forward to it as well. I'm praying for a bit of nice weather... we've had such a cold sping! I was going to bake some scones or some such for our get together, but I don't know if you all will want something more substantial before you head home. We could just do a finger food picnic lunch on the grass or something. What do you think?

  12. Oh how I'd love to spend time with you Heidi and your family. There are so many things I would love to just sit and chat with you about. Your boys sure could teach our little girl so much.

You really do live in a beautiful part of the world. Those grass teepees are amazing. Your boys are going to have such priceless memories of their childhood spent in lush fields, playing, imagining and creating together.

    Love

  14. Elise~ Wouldn't we have fun chatting?!

I think every child has a creative side. The three most important things to foster that would be raw materials, unstructured time, and restricted access to all the bells and whistles (toys, screens, etc...).

My weakness is trying to force the creativity and make it happen the way I want it to. :P I'm terrible when we do projects or crafts together. Often, I grab whatever it is that we're doing and do it right. Isn't that awful?! So I try to balance my control-freak nature by letting them be on their own outside or in their playroom as much as I can. It seems like that is when they really shine!
