Art and Tea

A few more Camp Avonlea pictures to share. Ilex, above, snacked on an apple off of the tree as she practiced her photography. The girls, below, intent on their watercoloring:

A couple snapshots of the end of camp tea party. The girls created place cards and party favor bouquets. They picked wild plums and blackberries to add to a fruit salad, cherry tomatoes from the garden, and herbs to flavor the cucumber sandwiches. Lavender lemonade was delightfully refreshing. The girls served scones with Devonshire cream and blueberry tea for dessert. We ate while they recited The Lady of Shallot. (They each chose portions to memorize.)

The art work created during camp (watercolors, scrapbook notebooks, and jewelry) was on display in the art room.

I think the girls had a wonderful time!

  1. Hi,
Love, love, love your blog. I want to be you when I grow up. (I am 40 years old):) Can you please tell me what the girls put in the folders/binders? I am thinking of doing this for my 12 year next summer and would love more info.

  2. I *love* the girls camp idea, especially in a day and age when 12 year olds are all too often "going on 20." This captures their sense of young womanhood and growing up while allowing them to still be children ...

I was so fascinated with the details that your sister put into the camp, I just had to show Tim. He pretty much rolled his eyes. "They chose camp names?!" I became defensive. He chuckled. "Wow, that seems like a lot of work." So I explained that this is the family that has amazing themed Christmas parties every year. "They even move the furniture out of the house in order to make the theme really work." Tim moaned, "Oh, her poor, poor husband." :)

  4. Beth~ I need to get a little more info from my sister and then maybe I can make up a simple info/outline letter to send out to people who might be interested in doing this with their daughters and friends. I had a couple additional requests. I'll see if I can get that done this week.

Carole~ Yeah, we're that crazy family, LOL! Maybe I shouldn't tell you that the camp names idea was my fault. :) I remember going to summer camp when I was young, and the fact that camp counselors got to choose their own cool name (I think I had a Chocolate and Koala) was pretty much the highlight for me, LOL. I'm name-obsessive. So, I casually asked Shannon what her camp name was. She looked at me like I was strange and said 'Shannon.' :) It was the girls who ran with it after than, choosing names for themselves and the instructors.

Shannon and I both enjoy all the little details of entertaining. I always want my postage stamp on the invitations to correspond with the party theme. ;-P Ah, we must be insane. And, yes, Shannon's husband is a *great* sport!

  5. I stalk your blog all the time and felt inclined to comment. I think you are secretly related to Martha Stewart. LOVE this camp. You are always so creative and everything I wish I could do. So true that nowdays girls are "13 going on 30". I have a 13 yr old daughter who would LOVE this. I love your recipies you post. I try them often. I just posted a recipe for granola you might like to try. I am a friend of Kambria's and frequented Poet's Garden with her......

  6. Ok, um...we need these camps for grown-ups. That looks so quaint and so relaxing and so delightful, I am drooling. Seriously. Ugh, how I yearn for a simpler life sometimes, with Devonshire cream and watercolor painting. Your blog always inspires!!

  7. I read thru the comments...YES, more details, please!! I am all about details, too. So few people nowadays entertain with style, even simple style...it's a lost art! I adore planning and hosting...I'm thinking how fun this would be for the young teen girls at our church!! You're awesome!!
