Did I mention I have a reader on my hands? This is Levi's book stack from the past month. Yep. The day after Christmas until today. 20 chapter books. Some easy, like The Family Under the Bridge. Some a little more challenging, like The Thief Lord. He finished page #345 this evening. Tomorrow is family movie night. Yes, I think we'll watch The Thief Lord to celebrate. What am I going to do with this kid?!
That's fabulous, Heidi!! I have 2 readers of my own (both boys) and keeping quality literature within an arm's reach oftentimes proves difficult...
ReplyDeleteWould you mind sharing some of Levi's favorite titles?? We've enjoyed so many of your read-aloud suggestions-- I'd love to know what your little man has enjoyed reading silently in case there are any we haven'e yet tackled :)
Thanks, and have a super day!
Probably the same thing I'm doing with mine, who is now 15: keep feeding him good books! And then have him take classes at the local college when he's in high school, and then graduate him early...And relish the days when you get to discuss Dante's Inferno or The Canterbury Tales with him--because he requested to read them...
ReplyDeleteThat's an impressive stack of books for the young lad.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see a list of your favorite books for children.
Heidi, that's awesome!
ReplyDeleteWOWOW!!! I guess that puts you in a place of NOT being able to pre-read everything he reads?!??! ;-) I reached that place pretty quickly, too.
ReplyDeleteMy eldest didn't know there was a movie for Thief Lord (which he's read), so we're adding that to our Netflix...
Thanks!
Yep. I've got a reader like that too, and he's your oldest's age (I think). I can't keep up with him, to his great delight! Where do these books fit in exactly with the schedules you've been writing about --the reading aloud in the a.m, the nightly before bed reading? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteI was that way growing up... I still love to read.
ReplyDeleteI was really hoping my oldest would be that way too but so far it hasn't happened yet on his own...
Heather and Edi~ Alrighty. Reading list coming up. :)
ReplyDeleteSmallWorld~ Wahoo! That sounds like so much fun. This kid is going to challenge my literary abilities in the higher grades...
Skeller~ I remember when I had grandiose plans of pre-reading all my kids' books. LOL!!! And it flew out the window in first grade. Any good books suggestions from your boys? :) Enjoy your movie!
Joni~ Ah, vacation days (lots after Christmas), weekends, lunch time, riding in the car, staying up waaaaay too late at night, that sort of thing. :)
Mab~ It is funny how kids have their own things and interests! I don't think my #2 will read like that (although he might surprise me), and I'm guessing he'll choose very different books when he does read. (More how-to, science, math sort of books.) I think all we can do as parents is supply them with the reading tools and good books. Horse to water, and all that. I am glad, though, that not all kids are just alike. :) And voracious reading isn't a moral sort of character trait...
Yay! There's nothing like the quiet time spent immersed in books...We are (happily!) drowning in books of every order around here. When I hear, "Mom, I'm bored..."; my usual response is, "Read or write a book!". We keep those blank Bare Books on hand for such moments.
ReplyDeleteI've got one just like him here...well a girl! She's happy as long as there's a book for her to read!
ReplyDeleteWay to go Levi

Heidi, I'm having trouble with comments; this is my third time trying. I was just wondering if all those books are for free reading? If so, do you require any sort of narration to test comprehension? Or do you let him read freely, as much as he want, as quickly as he wants?
ReplyDeleteellee
elleeyun~ Great questions! Those are free-reading books, and I don't require any sort of feedback from him. We talk about some of them together, but mostly I just let him read as much as he wants to. I have him read aloud to me here and there so I can double check that he is reading words correctly. When I require reading, we talk about what he has read, although I do most of the lesson reading aloud so that we can share the info, and I can ask questions.
ReplyDeleteMy 7 year old has finally taken off on a reading adventure too. For the last couple of weeks we can't seem to get enough books for her. I love it. I also love your blog. I'm so glad I found you.
ReplyDeleteHeidi, what a great photo idea! My 7 yr old Drew was challenged. He's also been reading like crazy; it's been blowing my mind. After seeing your post he said, "Oh yeah? I think I can read more than that before my birthday." (which is March 12) I'm grinning because I know he'll try :) Tell Levi, "great job! you're encouraging your 'peers'"
ReplyDeleteP.S. do you even see these comments from old posts?
~Tera
Jen~ Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting!
ReplyDeleteTera~ That's hilarious. I'll tell Levi. :) Yes, all comments are sent to my email inbox, so I get them even when they are left on really, really old posts. Makes it easy on me!
