SIX YEARS.
One thousand, six hundred, forty-one blog posts.
Gasp!! Can that be possible?
Who knew I had that much to say (other than my mom and my sisters and my best friend…)?
I didn’t realize when I started this journey that it would take on a life of its own. I’m glad that I made the decision to keep this a personal blog, but that also means that my topics are all over the place. And sometimes I post a bunch about one thing, and then the blog seems to shift as my life does as well. And sometimes I talk even when I have nothing to say.
I’m thankful for this record of the past six years of my life that I would never have kept otherwise.
I’m thankful for readers. And comments. I’m thankful for the things you have shared and taught me.
I’m thankful for the many friendships I have gained.
We really must celebrate.
The only way to celebrate here at Mt. Hope Chronicles is with chocolate chips cookies, sentence diagramming, or books. I already shared chocolate chip cookies for Valentine’s Day, and I’m guessing sentence diagramming doesn’t sound like much of a party to most of you, so books it is.
That’s right. An Amazon gift certificate give-away.
(And you can even get something other than books. Just don’t tell me.)
In a way, I’m just giving back a little portion of what you have given me. Because y’all have been awesome about purchasing books through my Amazon links the past few months. I’m a bit stunned at the response to my recommendations. (It terrifies me just a little.) Did you know that I get credit for all the other items you put in your cart when you go to Amazon through one of my links? So thank you to the fantabulous readers who buy mattress toppers, Oakley sunglasses, golf equipment, Kitchenaid stand mixers, Lego Ninjago sets, almond flour, and all sorts of other interesting things after hitting Amazon through my links. Seriously! Your purchases really make a difference. (Just in case you were wondering, I cannot see who purchased items, just what items were purchased!)
Here’s the deal. I’m giving away one $50 Amazon gift certificate to a lucky winner.
To enter the give-away, leave me a comment on this post letting me know how long you’ve been visiting and what you most enjoy reading about here at Mt. Hope. If you would like, you may even ask your burning questions or make requests for new post topics.
Make sure I have a way to contact you!
The give-away ends on Saturday, February 23rd at midnight, Pacific time. I’ll announce the winner on Tuesday the 26th.
The give-away is now closed. I’ll announce the winner on Tuesday the 26th.
Thanks for all of the kind words, friends and readers. They have meant so much to me!!

In the beginning, February of 2007, I had a very basic Blogger template. I can’t seem to find the image I added to my header about a year later in 2008 (sadness!), but I thought it would be fun to stroll down memory lane with a few more recent headers. I think the above collage was my first photo header in 2009.
Spring 2010:
November 2010:
Spring 2011 (My favorite!):
December 2011:
I know it is about time to update my current header, but I’m waiting for some super-duper inspirational pictures to choose from, and that just isn’t happening in February at our house.
Where will we be in another six years?
My boys will be 17, 14, and 12!! Lola will be 8! I will have been married 23 years and homeschooling for 13. Golly! I can’t even imagine what life will look like.
Will you join me for the adventure?
ETA:
I'm not sure if this will work as I am away from home and not working from my home computer, but a fabulous reader sent me a link to my archived blog with my first custom header. Let's see if I can get it posted here:

I've been enjoying your posts about you family for at least 3 years. I used to live in that part of the Pacific Northwest, so I truly enjoy your pictures of you and your dear ones there. with my prayers,
Betsy
I've only subscribed to your site for about 6 months now. My favorites are your homeschooling posts; I always get so many great ideas from you. I also love the beautiful photography! Thanks for sharing your life with all of us.
Wowza!! SIX years?! I've loved this journey with you and your homeschool adventures!
I have been reading your blog for three or four years now. My favorites to read are your homeschooling posts, as I'm just beginning our homeschooling journey this year with my six year old. I also always enjoy your lovely photos!
I've been reading for about two years, on and off? Not exactly sure. I really do like reading the homeschooling posts!
I've been reading for about a year. I found you searching for blogs of homeschooling moms who are a part of a Classical Conversations community. So the homeschooling posts I particularly look for, however I also enjoy your photography!
Now you pop up automatically in my g-reader. :)
I've been enjoying your blog for about 3 years now? I enjoy most everything about your blog, but I have to say I really liked the Book Detectives posts. I've recently become interested in CC, so your posts have been very helpful.
Thanks,
RMann
Congrats!!! I love your blog, and my favorite thing about it is the gorgeous and awesome photography. I enjoy the homeschooling posts too (who doesn't?).
I've been visiting your lovely blog since 2008! Wow! I love your homeschooling posts~they are always inspiring and thought-provoking. And, of course, I love your beautiful photographs!
Hi Heidi, I've been reading for probably at least five of those six years, and love that I can keep up on how your whole family is doing, since I don't have the Sunday visual link anymore (:
It's still great to run into you guys at Costco once in a while! I love your photography, interior decorating style, and how you keep it real while still striving to maintain high standards! You guys are great parents!! Tina
I've been reading since last summer. I appreciate all you share regarding homeschooling and your curriculum choices. It has been really helpful for me. And I love your photography!
I have been following you on your journey for about two years. I am so grateful that you can share your true
daily struggles and inspirations about parenting and
homeschooling! I can't tell you how much I have benefited from your posts on book choices and curriculums. I truly have enjoyed it all....from your photography, to decorating, to weight loss! Congratulations on six years and I look forward to your guidance and encouragement for the next six years!

I read you off and on after reading posts on the WTM boards, but finally subscribed a few years ago (I think, I know it was pre-Lola.) I like your homeschooling posts, but also love your entire life.lovely. theme which is so encouraging to me as a fellow mom of (4) boys (no girls yet, we're hoping...) I really do think you have such a lovely life and hope to continue reading about it.
Kristiana
I think the first post I read was a Leif and Daphne photo shoot, so 5-ish years. I love knowing you in real life and getting extra insight here into your thoughts and homeschool process. And if I'm looking for some book-shopping enabling, I always know where to go. . .
I've only been reading for a week or two, as I didn't know you had a blog until Faith linked us both on hers. :)
I think I've been reading 4? 5? years... You actually found me, I think! And I'm so thankful. You have been a great resource for my Luke & as a fellow introvert mama. You're a gift, Heidi! A beauty loving, resource sharing, generous, encouraging gift!
I just went to my old blog at homeschool blogger. I couldn't remember when I started blogging. October 2005. Over 7 years. My kids were 4, 7 and 8. Wow! they are now 11, 14, 15. Pre, 2nd and 3rd grade to 5th, 8th and 10th. I'm just floored thinking about it. Lets see how long ago did you take my photos. I think I found Poets Garden first and then learned about Mt Hope from your mom. All in the same year or pretty close. Nope-I went to poets garden with a friend for my birthday one year (may) and then the following may you took my photos. I just don't know what year that was. I still have a 16x20 bw of me in the trees in my room. Let me know if you remember.
Ha, that profile pic. That's the one I have in my room.
I've been reading your blog for maybe 5 (?) years. I also have 3 boys nearly the same ages so I laugh and empathize about the rambunctious boy stories and I wistfully enjoy your posts about Lola (we're done and no little Miss for us). I'm currently delving into many of your homeschool archives after deciding to take the plunge this year. I also love your one little word, your paleo adventures, your decorating, your photography, your adventures in my home state that I miss after being away for 30 years. Pretty much covers everything, doesn't it?! ;)

I have been reading and enjoying your blog for about 6 months. I enjoy reading your homeschool posts and I especially enjoyed your recipe for cake in a mug!!
I have been reading for about a year ... I found you while Googling Classical Conversations. I'm thankful for your homeschool posts as I'm trying to figure out my path on our new journey! We use many of the same resources! Plus I always love your book suggestions.

I must have been reading since 2009 or so-- I can't quite remember, but it was definitely pre-Lola! I love your photos and your posts about family adventures in the Northwest, which I, a Washingtonian exiled to the East coast, enjoy vicariously. I also like your book reviews. But I think my very favorite posts are the ones in which you round up a bunch of thoughtful links about education, academia, literature, raising boys, etc. I always enjoy what you find.
Congrats! I'm fairly new to your blog. Although my son goes to public school, I'm really a homeschooler at heart. I know that sounds weird, but my husband is not on board with the whole idea, so until things change (and they may never) we do a ton of activities after school and on the weekends. My son LOVES to read and being only in first grade his options at school are very limited. So we do unit studies on various books at home. And a lot of history. Your blog has really helped me focus my intentions when it comes to both literature and history. I just purchased Deconstructing Penguins and can't wait to receive it. We're working our way through the Chronicles of Narnia now and both my children, even my four year old love the books! Thank you for all your inspiration and motivation. You are such a blessing to others and your family and you really inspire me to try harder. Prayers for God's blessing on you and your family. : )
I think I found your blog sometime before Lola arrived - I remember reading along for your pregnancy because I had a little boy born about one month after her. My favorite posts are probably the daily life posts and CC/homeschooling ones as that is what drew me in, but truly, I just enjoy the peek into your space. Congrats on six years of blogging!
I am a Heidi groupie and have been reading for YEARS not months. I remember when your oldest was looking more like a youngster and less like a teenager (scary!). Frankly, MY children will never grow up. ;-)
Yours is in my top five favorite blogs and almost every post I think "I need to tell Heidi how much I loved this post" but then I move on. I'll try and do better about that.
Congrats on six wonderful years- and thanks for sharing your family, thoughts, educational encouragement photos and BEAUTIFUL life with us. Keep it up!

Six years! Our third-borns were babes in arms then. What a beautiful place you've made this. Thank you and congratulations.
I think I must have started reading your blog in 2009 because I remember that 2009 collage. Possible before. I love the photography and everything about homeschooling. You inspire me to decorate too. Plus I identify with your ups and your challenges. I need to go back to look at your posts on Classical Conversations but do you use CC as your core or is it supplemental? We start CC this next year. It will be supplemental for us and I'm curious as to how much it will add on to our day.
Not sure exactly how long, but definitely before Lola! I love how real you are. Not everything is peaches and sunshine. Thank you for that! And I love pics of your schoolroom. =)
Maybe it'll let me post today!!!
I can't remember what year but we were living out of the USA when I found you (probably around 2008-09 ish) because I remember one of the first comments I made. Something about being jealous of your closet space (we had no closets period), your red armoire, and the access you had to Dr. Pepper. ;).
Hi
I've been reading your blog for a little over three years. I love reading all your posts! I enjoy learning about your curriculum choices and book selections. My favorites are ones that reveal your "real" life chaos. Makes me smile that I'm not the only one. I can truly identify with your recent post about being an energy conserver. I am right there with ya. I have 5 little ones....one of which was born around the time Lola was born and one born just a few weeks ago....so your blog brings me much to ponder during those late night feedings. The older children are 9, 7 and 4. Thank you for being a consistent "real life" blogger who loves sentence diagramming as much as I do!!

Let's see...what *don't* I love about your blog??? He, he! Hmm...nothing! I've been reading maybe four years?! I love that you are personal, real, and inspiring. I like your photography style. I think it's pretty cool that our Lukes are birthday twins and our other boys are similarly aged. I love that we received the same unexpected blessing of a daughter after 3 wonderful boys. What you share about life with your kids is very easy to relate to. And, I always appreciate your homeschool posts and book suggestions. Thanks for sharing with us!!!
Oh my golly! Congrats on this monumentous occasion. I have no idea how long I have been reading, but I know it was preLola. Lol. I'd guess 3 years or so. As hard as you are on yourself about your housekeeping, your decorating style was one of the first things I poured over at the site. We also have 4 littles close in age to your crew, homeschool etc., so I love your homeschool posts as well. I will look forward to reading more of those and of course the decorating. :)
I think I have been reading for about a year. Our toddlers are almost exactly the same age. :)
I've been reading for several years now--not sure how long--maybe 4? I enjoy reading your homeschooling posts (we also attend CC and use SWB's materials) and looking at your beautiful home. I'm inspired by your home decorating style. Thanks for the chance to win, Heidi, and here's to six (plus!) more years of blogging!
I've only recently discovered your blog and I'm now an avid reader! I especiall love your headers! I wish I could do one for my blog. That's something I will need to work on.
I have three children, two of whom are grown and gone from home but my youngest is four and I would so love to homeschool him. I'm just concerned with homeschooling an only child, although I know lots of people do it. So, I learn about homeschooling from blogs like yours so please, don't ever stop!
Thanks you for all the wonderful posts.
if i had to guess how long i've been following you i'd say at least two years. i know it was before lola was born. i've always wondered what russ does for a living. you might've told us, but i forget. what do you love most about your life? what is your favorite strength? you least favorite weakness?
A few years, on and off. I just love your photos and reading posts about what you or your boys are reading or your homeschool days and curriculum. Thank you!
Love the posts about the kids, the photos, and the book recommendations. Been reading for at least 2yrs.
I've been reading your blog for years! Before you we're even pregnant with Lola! You blog has always been my favorite homeschooling blog. I loved your decorating posts as well. I always trust your recommendations, so thank you!!
Oh wow! Six years. I stumbled across your blog in the summer of 2008. We had just made the decision to homeschool our children. So I soaked in everything about your blog. Since then you've entertained us, encouraged us and offered us so much inspiration. You saved us on numerous occasions and not just with home schooling needs.
Congratulations & thank you so much!!
I have been reading about 1 and a half years. I like all of your family posts and positive thoughts!
I know I've been reading since you were pregnant with Lola. I have five boys and one girl so I just love seeing pics of your family. I most appreciate your book lists. I've requested many of your suggestions through our library and may have even purchased a few!Thank you for putting the time into those posts, they are extremely helpful to this homeschool mom! Bless you!
I've been coming at least since Lola was a baby, possibly before. I have a terrible memory for such things.
I love your book suggestions and, like most homeschool moms, I devour other folk's curriculum lists.
Congratulations on so many years blogging!
I am enjoying your homeschooling updates lately! My email is ebee333at aol dot com.
Hi Heidi, I have been reading here for about five years! Your resources and insight have greatly influenced my homeschool journey (we are just beginning!) Thank-you for your blog!
Congratulations Heidi. I love your blog. Many have come and gone on my bookmark tab but yours stays. Its a respite in the midst of internet chaos. You talk depth, reality and beauty. Thanks for sharing your life. I think I've been reading since the beginning, having "met" you at the well-trained mind forums.
I enjoy reading your thoughts about home educating and chaos and life with boys! Thanks for sharing!
Wow, Heidi! That's a lot of posts! Good for you for documenting your days so consistently. I like to think of the fun you and your kids will have in the future, when you look back on your words and photos. :) I've been encouraged and inspired by your homeschooling posts, and I have loved the fact that technology has allowed me to make a friend that I otherwise wouldn't have met. :)
Onward...to the next six years!!
I've been reading your blog since my oldest son was born--so five years now! Your homeschooling posts inspired me to bring my daughters home to learn. I love your posts about reading; your daughter reminds me of my second son, who is the same age, and the cutest handful I've ever seen; and I really really want to learn how to diagram a sentence!
I've enjoyed reading your blog for quite some time now - probably 4 or 5 years. I'm always excited to see your name show up in my Google Reader. I enjoy hearing what you have to say, as well as the beautiful images that always accompany your thoughts. Here's to six more years!!
I think I found your blog about 6 months ago, maybe closer to a year. I like the my son (7 years old) is close in age to your boys. I have read through your older posts to when they were 7. I have found your curriculum series very interesting, because we have a classical bend to our homeschool.
Thanks for taking the time to blog!
I am inspired by your blog with each new post. Have been following you for maybe a couple of years and I'm thankful for all that you share!

Heidi, I have been following your blog since early 2011. I can relate a lot to the life you share on your blog. I have 2 boys (7 and 9) and a little girl who just turned two. We homeschool, participate in CC, and have all the general craziness that comes with boys and a two year old. I have meant to comment on your "Random Thoughts on Energy" post and never got around to it. I enjoy your honest, candid expressions, your literature and curriculum suggestions, and the general excitement you share about life.
Thank you for each and every post! I've been a reader off and on since coming over from the WTM board. I appreciate your advice and suggestions, as I am homeschooling my 2 boys (11 & 6) and a girl in-between (9). Your blog is beautiful!
I think been reading your blog for about 3 years. What I love about your blog is that you are very real in your posts. I love that. I pretty much enjoy reading all you have to say whether it be homeschooling, paleo, family, or life. Your photography is great too!. I look forward to reading for many years to come.

I first found you through Simple Homeschool. You had done a day in the life and I think it was either right before or right after Lola was born. I had twin girls and was pregnant with my first boy, have had another since then! I love seeing how another Mom of 4 juggles life :) I found Classical Conversations through you and am forever grateful for that. We are in our first year and loving it. I like almost everyone else love your homeschool posts. I love the real life peeks as well like your "Random Thoughts on Energy". Your musings about where you will be in 6 years is making me want to blog to start to record and remember more of our life as we start on our homeschool journey. Thanks so much for all the inspiration. I was a blog junkie but gave up all but a few and you are one of them :) thanks for taking the time to share your life and heart here.
Couldn't say for sure. Maybe 4 years? Thanks for your blog.
i found your blog last year while preparing for the new school year and was sooo inspired by all your detailed homeschooling posts! my oldest is also a ferocious reader and i love to go through your book lists for new ideas.
thank you so much for sharing!
Heidi, congrats! I've been reading your blog since long before Lola was born (I loved the way you announced that pregnancy on the tour of your home). I've never commented before, but I love, love, love your blog. Though I don't homeschool, I try to after-school, so I love reading about the books y'all love and your information about classical education.
I found your blog two years ago when I was trying to decide whether or not to use Classical Conversations. When I saw another home that loved literature as much as we did and still used CC, I knew it could work for us.
My favorite posts are your curriculum posts, and the links to thoughtful articles (from Circe, NY Times, etc.).
Congratulations on this milestone on your blog!
p.s. I was the one who sent the Michigan postcard when you requested postcards from all the states...a small way I could think to thank you for your role in my life!
I found your blog via TWTM forum, maybe a year ago? I love your book recommendations, and your photography really enhances your blog. Thanks for offering a giveaway!

Gosh, I've been following your blog for several years now, not sure how many. Before I started homeschooling, and before your Lola and my Sophia arrived. You've influenced me to join CC and I love that you have a pack of boys and a little house like me. Inspires me. :)
Heidi-
I've been reading your blog off an on for a year now. I love seeing what you do with your kids and when my kid(s) are of reading age, your blog will be tremendously helpful. Your witty and comical way of writing is very entertaining to read...and how you manage with so many boys (and one girl). I love your photography; you have such a great eye for things. I love seeing pictures of your home. You and your whole family have always had the decorating nack. AND the one bowl chocolate cake? Seiously! To die for! I love that you're in A-town and that I can picture where you are. :) Take care!
I don't know how many years I've been reading your blog, but it has been years. Thanks for the inspiration of your blog and also the chance to win a gift from Amazon! I would love to read more "day in the life" posts like you were doing awhile back.
Hi! I've been reading for about a year, living vicariously through you. I love the posts that detail what you're teaching in your homeschool. I homeschooled for 11 years, but then had to put my kid in public school so I could go back to college (I graduate in April with my RN!). I know it was the right decision at the time, but I sure miss having my children home with me!
I think I've been reading for about 6 months. I love to see all the book recommendations. My 6yo daughter is a huge reader, and I have a hard time coming up with good books for her to read (that she'll want to read!)
A Rhyme for Heidi:
You're my top resource
for homeschool ideas... and books of course!
Your online curriculum discourse
I heartily endorse.
So I'll say till I'm hoarse
"Make Mt. Hope Chronicles your source!"

Visiting your blog for... almost a year! Thank you :) Your blog blesses me and I truly, truly appreciate all the time and energy you put into it.
Happy 6 year anniversary! Y'know, I think I've been visiting for all six years :-). I think I most enjoy your book reviews! And, of course, attending the Choc Lit Guild was a highlight of my Mt. Hope experiences. I also adore your pictures of your kiddos. And your decor. :-) In summary, I pretty much really appreciate your little corner of the blogosphere...
i think i remember when you started the blog, so i've been reading since the beginning, and reading your comments on TWTM board before then. you are inspiring, and gifted, heidi, never let yourself believe less!
you are appreciated!

I think I've been reading for at least 3 years. That's quite awhile! I really enjoy reading about what you do in your homeschool...I have 11 year old twins and its always interesting to me to read your boys' booklists.
I've been reading your blog for about a year. I love your book recommendations and homeschool resources. I'm inspired by your kids' love of reading and your wonderful use of space/decorating. Thanks for what you do.
I've been following for probably 4 years now and really enjoy the curriculum posts. Helps my homeschooling so much! Keep it up, Heidi!
I've been reading your blog for about 4 years. I love all the posts on reading suggestions (even when the intent of the post is not to directly suggest a specific book). Your boys love of reading have inspired my former reluctant reader (now ten years old) to become an avid reader.
I also love your posts of get-togethers at your mom's house. Our family is very small, so I'm always inspired to see families who have a chance to get together and celebrate.
Thank you for the inspiration and beautiful photography.
Hi, I've been reading your blog for a good couple of years now. Way before Lola was born. I love to read but I also love to read about what others are reading and you talk about books a lot! So that keeps me coming back, that and your photography and your homeschooling info - everything really.
Kathleen.

Hi Heidi! I've been reading your blog for about a year. As a fellow CC mom, I love your homeschooling posts. It is so helpful to see how others do CC. I most love all your book suggestions, although my budget may not appreciate the additional books that constantly enter our home. You are both inspiring and relatable. Thank you for sharing your life with us.
One question: Are there required reading books for your boys? Do they absolutely have to read a certain number or certain titles? Do you have any kind of incentive program for them to read difficult books? Or, can they just choose whatever is available of the general subject matter?
I've been reading your blog on and off for about 3 years. I live in Corvallis, but came across your blog from a friend in Arkansas. I check in and often find new things to do in our area that I hadn't known about or done before (like the Bard in the Quad at OSU. Thanks for all you share.

I just found you today actually! We just started CC this year, and I love seeing how other CC families incorporate all that information!! Excited to peek around your blog more!
I have been reading for probably 4 years now - maybe more. Yours was the VERY FIRST blog I ever read. I was googling potager ideas and this beautiful lady and precious little boys popped up. She home schooled, gardened, read literature, shared her faith etc..etc. I was intrigued and amazed. Then I read a post you wrote to a friend and shared some of your fears and anxieties and I realized you were all that and so much more. I probably love your pictures the best. You caputure people so well! Happy 6 years!
I love your blog. I have been reading it since my daughter was 3 and now she is 5. You have introduced me to Well Trained Mind and I am loving our homeschooling days. I love pictures do your home and all the literature recommendations. Thanks!
I've been reading your blog for about one year. I LOVE your curriculum posts! I always enjoy reading about what others are using.
Hooray and congrats Heidi I have been visiting at least 4 years... I adore watching your family grow, your home decor, and book recommendations!! Happy Blogiversary friend....
Hello Heidi its Mindy. I have been reading your blog for about a year and a half. I certainly love your links to curricula or books, although I also very much enjoy when you post about the imperfection of life as a mother and home educator. I know you can make things look lovely with your camera, and do, but your lens also seems to be drawn to the beauty in the downs as well as the ups--or better--doesnt grade them as downs and ups at all. I appreciate that.
Hi! I've been reading your blog for about three years (I think!). In the beginning, I googled something about Classical Conversations and found your blog. Your CC and homeschooling posts were extremely helpful during the two years I homeschooled. Although my kids are now "in" school, I still benefit from your posts on education, especially the reading lists and book recommendations. I absolutely LOVE your photography too! Thanks for the opportunity for the giveaway and thank you for sharing so much here on your blog!
This entry is for Julie M. who couldn't post a comment but sent me the nicest email. :)
This entry is for my best friend Char who also couldn't post a comment but reads every word I post. :)
I have only been reading your blog for a few weeks - it was recommended to me by my sister-in-law as one of her favorite resources for figuring out her homeschooling curriculum. We're just diving into all the options out there now and I am loving hearing the path you are on!
I love your blog, love your reading suggestions and have recommended it to a number of other people. Thanks so much for the giveaway.
Hi, I've been enjoying your blog for a few years - at least a year before Lola was born. I love the photos. I have friends that home school and shared your classical conversations. I like that you are a 'real' person - life sometimes is messy. : ) And very excited for you that you met Tsh - I enjoy her blog as well.
TeriDavis@live.com
I have lingered over each and every one of these kind comments, friends. Thank you so much!!
The give-away is now closed. I'll announce the winner on Tuesday the 26th.
