McDowell Creek Falls Hike and Swim

McDowell Creek Hike 2 @ Mt. Hope Chronicles

We missed hiking last week due to the Classical Conversations Parent Practicum where I spoke for three days, Leif and Lola attended learning camps, and Levi was a teen helper. [Luke was at summer camp all week.]

This week I’m prepping for speaking in Auburn, Washington, on Saturday and then leaving for a family camping trip on Sunday, but we still managed to get in several hours of hiking and swimming at McDowell Creek Falls today with Holly and Ivy. [We were last there in April.] We did some hefty hiking (those uphill slopes and steps are killer), but we also had lots of time for exploring, playing, and swimming. This is the first time the kids have ever walked under the three-tiered falls.

This is also the first time they walked up to the falls in the picture below.

It was also the first time we had ever walked up to the big falls. I’m not sure if you can see in the picture below, but Leif and Luke are standing under/behind the falls.

Another great adventure in the books.

I’m not sure how often I’ll be posting in the next week or two because we’ll be off enjoying our summer, but you can always find me on Facebook or Instagram.

  1. Hi Heidi! Long time follower, just a few times commenter. I'm from Arkansas. My son is engaged to a sweet girl from Oregon! We are going there this weekend for an engagement party and to meet her family. We will be flying into Portland and staying in the Oregon City area. It will be a quick trip but we will have some time on Saturday afternoon and Monday to do some sightseeing. We will be going to Mt. Hood on Sunday afternoon. I love all of your posts of the adventures y'all take! Is there anything near where we will be that is a must see/do? We are up for a hike to one of these beautiful waterfalls if you can tell us where to go. I'm really wanting to make a quick trip over to the coast at some point (maybe Friday late afternoon when we arrive). Where's the best place for that? Any suggestions you can make are much appreciated!!

  2. Hi Lauralli! Welcome to Oregon! I think the waterfalls and hikes we've been enjoying lately would be a little far for you to drive. I'd recommend Multnomah Falls [the Columbia River Highway] for an adventure closer to the Portland area. You would get a gorgeous view of the Columbia Gorge and there are several waterfalls along the route. Multnomah Falls is the busiest and most commercialized, but there are others with some hiking trails along the way. Enjoy your visit!! http://www.mthopechronicles.com/2014/08/the-scenic-route.html
