Since beginning my Shakespeare Project, I’ve read (or listened to) multiple retellings, watched six different plays in 8 performances (two were duplicates, but performed by different groups), and watched two movie renditions, but I had not yet read or watched As You Like It. I spied this new Kenneth Branagh movie version at Costco the other day and tossed it into the cart.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!
Set in 19th Century Japan, the scenery, costumes, and artwork are stunning and dreamy all at once. As You Like It is neither as humorous as Much Ado About Nothing, nor as tragic as Romeo and Juliet, but rather a nice blend of drama and merriment.
A great introduction to Shakespeare for young people as well as a enjoyable film for adults. Two thumbs up.
